Film Trailers
1.) Berberian sound studio- (2012)
Directed by Peter Strickland

Warp Films
Available at- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKOPh5ZEciQ
Purpose- the purpose is to entertain the audience and create suspense since it is classed as a thriller, it also gives a taste o the plot in order to interest their audience in the film.
Form -The form is a trailer for a film
Content and Meaning - The mise en scene that is used in this video is used to create preferred reading (Stuart Hall 1980) of horror and suspense by using low key lighting, the connotations of this are dark and sinister which follows the conventions of the horror film genre.
Location-The setting of the film is in the sound studio of an Italian horror film. The lighting used is Low key an example of this is when there is next to no light in the scene and the characters are silhouetted by the light behind them coming from a film projector, this creates an enigma as to the characters true intentions.
Lighting- The lighting used in the trailer is low key lighting which is used becuase irt is a standard convention of the horror genre.
Props- Props are used to connote the setting of a sound studio, with various sound recording equipment and the use of screams is a common convention in horror/thriller films.
Colours- The colours used within the trailer are very dark colours with the occasional bright light from the film projector to contrast the darkness which is present throughout almost the entire trailer. This could be used to connote the dark presence within Gilderoy (Toby Jones' character) that has been brought on by the horror film he is working on. This is evident when you see Gilderoy stood in front of a blank screen which denotes how distant from reality Gilderoy has become from reality.
Gestures- One gesture used in this trailer is when Gilderoy is stood in front of the white screen, this shows how he has become distanced form reality and is slowly losing his mind.
This film trailer is non-linear because the events are not shown in chronological order.
This film follows Todarov's four stages of narrative structure. This is shown because It starts off with Gilderoy arriving at the sound studio, when everything is good (equilibrium). Then it shows the start of Gilderoy's decent into madness (disruption). However no action against the disruption is shown, this is to make people want to watch the film.
Camerawork and editing- In this trailer there is an example of a shallow depth of field (39 seconds), this is done in order to show that these two characters are the centre of attention. An extreme close up is used in the trailer (1:04 seconds), It is used in order to create a specific effect on the audience. extreme close ups are used throughout the trailer, this may be in order to connote the location of the sound studio. At 1 minute there is an extreme close up, this has been used in order to show the look of despair on the women's face. Another shot that is denoted in the trailer is a two shot (36 sec) this is used to denote the relationship between the two characters. Also the shot used at 8 seconds is a wide shot, this is used to introduce the character and the the awards the film got. Another Camera shot used in this trailer is an extreme close-up use at 1:42 seconds, this shot is used in order to show the emotion on the characters face and what the character could be thinking/feeling. Another camera shot is an extreme close up of a woman's eye used at around 1:22 seconds, it is used in order to create a feeling of horror within the audience.Another camera shot is used at 1:47 seconds and it is a mid shot of Gilderoy silhouetted by the light of a film projector, this shot may have been used to show how working on the horror film has distanced Gilderoy from reality.
A camera angle used is a low angle shot at 10 seconds, It is used to show that Gilderoy is not respected in Italy or in the sound studio since the receptionist immediately stops him from talking to her. An editing technique used are title graphics, they are used at 10 seconds and they are the awards that the film won at film festivals, they connote the success of the film, which further promotes the film.
Jump cuts are also used from 1:36 seconds to 1:46 and shows lots of scenes from the film in the space of 10 seconds.
Sound - An example of non- diegetic sound is the soundtrack which plays behind the first half of the trailer which adds to the creepy mood of the trailer. Also an example of diegetic sound is used at 51 seconds is the sound of a recording being played by Gilderoy.
Genre - The genre of this film is horror/thriller I know this because it uses many common conventions of a horror film such as close up shots of equipment from the sound studio and other things such as the extreme close up of the spider in order to create an effect of fear within the audience, and fast editing, when it cuts between things such as the close ups mentioned previously. It also creates suspense which is a key convention of a thriller film.
Intended audience - The intended audience of this is 15+ of any gender because there is nothing in the trailer that would promote it to any specific gender. The audience is ABC1 which means that they have a disposable income and can spend money on going to the cinema and seeing films.
2.)Donkey punch- (2008)
Directed by- Oliver Blackburn
UK
Warp Films
Available at- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQ8N9c0p3bo
Purpose -The purpose of this trailer is to entertain the viewer and create suspense in the plot of the film to make the viewer want to go and see the film. The trailer may also be to inform people of the dangers of trusting strangers, and using drugs.
Form- The form of this is a film trailer. This trailer is non-linear because it does not progress in chronological order. This follows the usual convention of trailers in general.
Content and Meaning - The mise en scene in this trailer is used to create a preferred reading (Hall 1980) of suspense and tension.
Location-The location denoted is a holiday style setting, this connotes that the characters want to have a good time. However the location switches to a yacht which connotes luxury and wealth. However the mood soon changes in the trailer when the lighting changes from high key to low key and the editing speeds up and the characters are shown to be in danger.
Lighting -The lighting used primarily is high key lighting to show the mood of the characters. Once the characters situation darkens the lighting becomes low key to connote the change in situation and the increase in tension.
Gestures- An example of a gesture used is when the girl peeks through the crack in the door, this connotes the apprehension and worry of the girl because she is checking what is on the other side of the door, this also reinforces the gender stereotypes of females being weak and subordinate.
Costumes- The costumes used in the trailer are clothes that people would wear day-to-day, but also are used to reinforce the idea of Male gaze (Laura Mulvey 1975) so the men in the trailer wear things like jeans and shirts with sunglasses, or just shorts, while the women wear bikinis, this also supports the idea of Male gaze (Laura Mulvey 1975).
Colours- The colours in the trailer are bright vibrant colours in the first half of the trailer such as orange and yellows etc to connote the 'Happy' start to the film, but this changes in the second half of the trailer because the colours used then are dark blues and blacks to help change the mood of the trailer to a darker more intense mood. This trailer is non-linear. This trailer does show Todarovs ideas of narrative structure.(Tzvetan Todarov 1977) Because it starts with an equilibrium where the girls are on holiday, then they go to the yacht and a disturbance takes place, the girls then try to get off the yacht, this is the action against the disturbance. The trailer will not show the resolution because if it did there would be no point in seeing the film. This trailer does show examples of Male gaze (Laura Mulvey 1975).
Camerawork and editing - In this trailer there is an example of an extreme close up at 1:35 seconds, this is used in order to show the fear on the characters face while she tries to look through the cracks in the door. Also in the trailer there is a high angle shot, this shot is usually used to show the character in the scene as being small and weak, in this shot it can be used in this way to show that the characters are scared because they have to get rid of a dead body.
An editing technique is a fast motion used very early on in the trailer, it is used as a kind of ellipsis to show the passage of time and cut out the bits the audience don't need to see. Another editing technique is a flash of white which connotes the mood of the group while they are on the boat but this changes because after it a fade o black is used to show how the mood of the trailer is becoming darker.
Sound - An example of non-diegetic sound is the sound track which plays up until the enigma of the trailer to show the emotions of the girls since the song is fast and upbeat, but the song stops after the enigma.
Genre- The genre of this film is a thriller. I know this because it is trying to create suspense which is what all thriller films do. It does this through fast editing and low key lighting in the second half of the trailer.
Intended audience - The intended audience of this would be 18+ females because the main protagonist of the film is female so it would appeal to a female audience. It would be 18+ because it is suggested in the trailer that sexual content is included in the film which would necessitate an 18+ target audience. The audience is ABC1 because they have a disposable income and can spend money going to the cinema.
3.) Another me - (2013)
Directed by- Isabel Coixet
UK
Available at- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg37MLNj16Q
Purpose- the purpose of this trailer is to entertain the films audience through a taste of the plot that is given in the trailer.
Content and Meaning - The mise en scene of this trailer is used to create a preferred reading (Hall 1980) of tension.
Location- The setting of the trailer changes between various dark environments form a tunnel to a school it does this to create tension for the audience It uses the contrast between fast and slow editing styles and changes between the two throughout the trailer, for example a fast editing style is used when they are trying to create suspense when shes running away form something in the dark school, and a slow editing style is used when the trailer is trying to set up the foundations for the plot, this is shown right at the beginning of the trailer when it shows the characters normal life.
Gestures - A gesture used in the trailer is when the girl is cutting her hair in the mirror, this denotes that something bad has happened to that character.
Costume- An example of a costume used in the trailer is a school uniform this creates verisimilitude because many people have to wear some kind of uniform almost everyday.
Props- A prop denoted in the trailer is the camera the girl is using at the beginning and end of the trailer. The camera connotes memories and remembering past events. And the trailer uses this when it says 'But what if you see a moment you'd never lived'. This trailer shows ideas of narrative structure (Todarov 1977), Because at first it shows the main character going about their normal life, but she then she sees her other self in a photo, this is the disruption, it then shows her trying to get rid of her doppelganger, this is the action against the disruption.
Camerawork and editing - In this trailer a wide shot is used at 9 seconds, this is used in order to introduce the main character and the locations that the film will take place in. Also a close up shot is used at 44 seconds, this is used to show the other face in he mirror. Another shot that is used around 55 seconds in, is a tracking shot, it is used when the main character is running down a corridor from something, this shot is used in order to follow the action because the character is the main focus of the scene, following them makes the audience feel as though they are closer to the action, this is also an editing technique called a match on action shot because the movement of the girl running away is continued over several shots.Another shot is at 57 seconds, the shot follows a scene where the main character is running away form something, the shot in question shows a hand pushing open the door that the character just ran through, this is also an action match shot because the action of the girl running is seen through several consequent shots, it does this in order to create tension and show that the character is being chased by an unknown Another shot that is used is a mid-shot at 1:53 seconds.
An editing technique used is an insert shot used at 42-43 seconds, it shows the mirror in a wider shot then goes into a close up of the face of the doppelganger, this technique is used in order to show that something is of importance to the plot. An editing technique used in this trailer is a fade to black used to show how time has passed between the events shown, and the colour black is used to match the genre and mood of the film.
Sound - An example of non-diegetic sound used in the trailer is the soundtrack that is playing until 46 seconds at which point it builds up to a dramatic conclusion and then the sound of a heartbeat is played to make the trailer more tense and to put the audience on edge. An example of diegetic sound i the sound of the scissors when the main character is cutting her hair.
Form- The form of this is a film trailer. This trailer is non- linear so it follows the usual conventions of film trailer.
Genre- the genre of this film is 'Mystery/Thriller' because the enigma within the films plot takes the audience want to know the answer behind it.
Intended audience - The intended audience of Another me are female teenagers because the main character is female so this will appeal to a female audience and the fact that a school location is shown several times throughout the trailer so it would appeal to a teenage audience. The audience is ABC1 so they have a disposable income so they can afford to spend money going to the cinema.
4.) Dead mans shoes - (2004)
Directed by- Shane Meadows
UK
Warp films
Available at- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFi6FrAV9SE
Purpose - The purpose of this film trailer is to entertain the audience and persuade them to watch the film, and find more out about the plot.
Content and Meaning - The mise en scene in this trailer is used to create a preferred reading (Hall 1980) of drama. It does this by using the music with starts of slow and soft when he is walking with his brother but once he starts attacking those who killed his brother the music becomes faster and louder to go along with the events taking place in the trailer. The lighting used in the trailer is high key, this gives the trailer a realistic feel to it.One prop denoted in the trailer is the gas mask worn by Richard, this connotes warfare since a gas mask is iconic of warfare. It could also connote danger because gas masks are worn to avoid harm. This trailer follows Todarovs four stages of narrative structure very closely, with a clearly present equilibrium and a clear disruption.
Camerawork and Editing - In this trailer an establishing shot is used at 13 seconds, this is used in order to show the 'calm before the storm' feeling to the beginning of the trailer with the two characters walking through the country. Also a mid shot is used at 1:09 seconds, this is used to show the gestures the character is making and telling the audience something more about the character, in this case the gesture would be him holding his arms out inviting them to attack him. Another shot used in the trailer is a close up used at 1:16 seconds, this is used to show the emotion of sadness on the characters face. A camera angle used at 56 seconds is a high angle shot of one of the antagonists this angle is used to make the main antagonist seem more powerful, this also supports gender stereotypes of men being more powerful and dominant. Another example a low angle shot is used at 1:11 seconds and it is of the main antagonist, it is used to make him appear stronger and more dominant this is reinforced by the gun, This also supports gender stereotypes of men being stronger and more powerful.
An example of editing technique that is used are title graphics which help set up the plot of the film. Another editing technique used is a series of fades used when the characters are walking through the country, it is used as a kind of ellipsis to show that time has passed between the scenes.
Sound - An example of non-diegetic sound is the music that plays while Richard and Anthony walk through the country, the music gives a peaceful feeling to the first part of the trailer. An example of diegetic sound is the sound of the rifle cocking at 1:10 seconds.
Form -The form of this is a film trailer. This trailer does not follow a chronological order, this follows the usual convention of film trailers.
Genre -The genre of this is 'Crime, Drama, Thriller'
Intended audience - The intended audience of Dead mans shoes would 18+ males because graphic violence is shown in the trailer and all of the characters shown in the trailer are male so this will help it appeal to a male audience. The audience is ABC1 which means that they can afford to spend money on going to the cinema.
5.) Kill list- (2011)
Directed by- Ben Wheatley
UK
Warp films
Available at- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqkqF--v1tg
Purpose - The purpose of this trailer is to intrigue the audience and make them want to find out what happens in the plot.
Content and Meaning - The mise en scene in this trailer is used to create a preferred reading (Hall 1980) of curiosity since the trailer actually reveals very little about the plot. The trailer does this by using high key lighting in the first half of the trailer which gives the film a realistic feel and then in the second half they use low key lighting to give a creepier feel to the trailer. Also in the second half the music becomes really intense and the scenes shown are darker and grittier than in the first half. This trailer does not follow Todarov's ideas of narrative structure because it does not show an action against the disruption ( whatever the disruption may be).
Camerawork and editing - In this trailer there is a close-up shot at 32 seconds, it shows the main character pointing a gun at something, this shot is used in order to introduce the character and what the character will be like throughout the film. Also at 44 seconds there is a tracking/two shot, this could have been used in order to show that these two characters are the centre of attention at this point in the trailer.Another camera shot used is used at 2 seconds, it is used to let the audience see things from the main characters perspective in this case it shows his peaceful home life which contrasts his job as a hitman. Also thee is a close up shot used at 29 seconds, it is used to show the characters facial expressions. Also the shot used at 1:31 seconds is a wide shot used to create an enigma and make the audience ask the question 'who is that woman?'. An editing technique used are title graphics which are used at 42 seconds, they say 'the most gripping British thriller in years' this promotes the film further. Another that is used is an insert shot that is used at 36 seconds.
Sound - An example of non diegetic sound is the music that plays throughout the trailer which helps build the creepy feel to the trailer. An example of diegetic sound is the silenced gunshot at 32 seconds.
Form - The form is a film trailer. This trailer does not follow a chronological order this follows the usual conventions of film trailers.
Genre - Kill list is classed as a 'Crime, Horror, Thriller'
Intended audience - The intended audience of Kill list is males of an age 18+ because the film is described as disturbing in the trailer and when a film is described as disturbing you would assume that it is aimed at an older audience. And almost all of the characters in the trailer are male which would promote the film to a male audience. The audience is ABC1 so they can afford to spend their money on going to the cinema.
